About the Doulas of the South Bay

BirthPostpartumTraining/Certification

We are a co-op of professional women (doulas)
bringing compassion, calm, knowledge and experience
to the birth and postpartum environment.

Our Birth Doulas believe that childbirth is a unique and miraculous experience and a memory the mother will hold near for the rest of her life. Our goal is to nurture and support the mother bringing emotional and physical comfort throughout the labor and birthing experience. We provide reassurance and comfort measures such as positioning, movement, massage, and breathing and relaxation techniques designed to decrease pain and anxiety. For mothers who plan to breastfeed their newborns our birth doulas are trained and pleased to offer both assistance and encouraging support right after the baby’s birth.

We practice a variety of birthing methods and styles, assist in cesarean births as well as support to those pursuing a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). We are familiar with current standard practices and alternatives. We will answer your questions and clarify new information you may receive so that you and your partner can make the right decisions for you with non-judgmental support.

We work in cooperation with doctors, nurses, midwives, partners and families in the hospital, birth center and home, enhancing your experience with our calming presence. A doula’s assistance encourages and empowers you and your partner to achieve the best possible outcome while preserving a positive birth memory.

Our Postpartum Doulas believe that welcoming a new baby into your home is a profound life-changing experience for the whole family and can sometimes be a little overwhelming. We understand the needs, concerns, and questions of parents with a newborn. We specialize in assisting families in learning to understand and care for their baby.

Our services are tailored to your specific needs and desires, and to give you rest and time to bond with your baby. They may include:

We have also been trained in lactation support, careful listening skills and non-judgmental support, the promotion of parent-infant bonding, coping skills, and symptoms of postpartum disorders. We are equipped with resources and referrals to ease your transition, meet your needs and build your confidence. Our services are designed to encourage the development of strong family bonds, confident parents and healthy babies.

Our Training and Certification Doulas of the South Bay are trained and are certified or working towards certification, by one of the national or international doula certifying organizations, i.e.: DONA (Doulas of North America), CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association), etc.

We routinely update our skills by pursuing Continuing Education Units, reading articles and periodicals, and attending workshops and conferences sponsored by experts in our fields.  Once we have our initial certifications, our focus turns to our re-certification, and our education continues.
